Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, has ordered a coordinated assessment of communities affected by recent flooding.
In the directive issued Thursday, the governor asked relevant ministries to strengthen its long term flood management system.
The directive applies to the ministries of environment, works, water resources, lands and physical planning, health and agriculture; alongside the Osun Waste Management Agency (OWMA) and Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA).
The state governor said affected local governments must submit verified reports detailing flood locations, households affected, infrastructure damage and immediate needs, and charged OSEMA to coordinate emergency assistance and establish a verified register of affected households.
Adeleke also directed the ministry of eorks to inspect damaged bridges, culverts and roads and implement emergency safety measures, while the ministry of environment and OWMA are to clear critical waterways, drainage channels and culvert entrances.
For longer term flood-risk management, the governor ordered a flood infrastructure performance audit covering major interventions undertaken from 2020 to date.
He also directed the development of an Osun flood and stormwater master plan based on catchment level hydrological and hydraulic assessments.
The state will establish OSUN FLOOD WATCH, an integrated early warning and community reporting platform, while a bridge and culvert hydraulic safety register will classify critical crossings according to structural and hydraulic risks.
Adeleke said the objective was to establish a “permanent, data driven and climate resilient flood management system” for Osun state.
