ALERT: NNPC says fuel discount does not restore petrol subsidy

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has clarified that its petrol discount initiative is a temporary relief measure and does not amount to a restoration of the federal government’s fuel subsidy policy.

Andy Odeh, NNPC Ltd.’s chief corporate communications officer, stated this in an press release on Friday, as the company extended its discount programme until October 31 amid rising global crude oil prices and pressure on domestic petrol costs.

According to Andy Odeh, the company introduced the discount on October 1 to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary. The initiative was subsequently extended to provide additional relief to households, businesses and commuters affected by higher fuel prices.

Andy Odeh said the discount applies to NNPC Retail outlets nationwide and does not establish a uniform national pump price or alter the market-based pricing framework for petroleum products.

The statement followed remarks by Taiwo Oyedele, minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, on Thursday concerning measures to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices.

In a separate announcement, the presidency explained that NNPC Retail would forgo its petrol retail profit margin to offer temporary relief to consumers.

The development highlights the wider challenges of balancing fuel affordability with Nigeria’s energy policy objectives. Petrol remains an important source of energy for transportation and businesses, while the country continues to pursue cleaner energy alternatives.

For climate policy, the longer-term question is how Nigeria can expand access to affordable renewable energy and cleaner transport options while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

NNPC said it would continue working with the federal government and other stakeholders to maintain reliable fuel supplies and communicate the scope of its customer-relief measures.
