The Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (CR-SEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Nigerian Red Cross Society have assessed drainage channels around the University of Cross River State, Calabar, following repeated flooding affecting the institution and nearby communities.
The assessment, conducted on Thursday, followed a letter from Francisca Bassey, the varsity vice chancellor, drawing attention to the worsening condition of drainage channels within and around the university.
During the inspection, the team observed extensive siltation, blocked sections and damaged drainage infrastructure. Some concrete structures had collapsed, while other sections appeared inadequate to contain the level of water passing through them.
The team also visited residential areas around the university where several houses affected by repeated flooding had reportedly been abandoned.
Nyong said CR-SEMA and NEMA would study the findings and identify appropriate interventions. He added that efforts were underway to bring in a swamp buggy to assist with desilting blocked drainage channels.
Awoji said he would present the inspection findings to NEMA for further consideration.
The assessment found that the drainage network carries run off from parts of Calabar, including areas around Marian, the Highway and Calabar South, towards the sea.
Authorities said blockages, damaged structures and inadequate drainage capacity have contributed to water overflow during heavy rainfall.
