Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos state commissioner for the environment and water resources, has dismissed a trending flood video said to be from Lekki, an upscale area in the state.
An X user posted a since deleted clip of a heavily flooded road and claimed it was a situation report from Lekki.
Because Lekki is a naturally formed peninsula, the area is often prone to flooding during rainy seasons.
An unprecedented volume of rainfall recorded over the past few weeks has overwhelmed the state, resulting in flooding in some communities including Lekki.
Reacting to the viral clip on July 14, Wahab said the video attributed to Lekki was a deliberate dissemination of false information.
“While we acknowledge and respect everyone’s right to freedom of expression, it is important to recognize that every right comes with corresponding responsibilities and legal limits. The deliberate dissemination of false information and misleading narratives not only undermines the efforts of the Lagos State Government but also diminishes the credibility of genuine complaints raised by well-meaning residents,” he said.

We kindly encourage you to verify the authenticity and origin of such content before sharing it, as the dissemination of inaccurate information can mislead the public and undermine genuine discussions about issues affecting Lagos. Thank you for your understanding.”
The X user took down the video after Wahab’s post.
